“Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” Winston Churchill
You have a dream in your heart, it burns deep and plays in your mind every waking moment.
Sometimes it may even seem that the dream of yours will never come true.
Many times you simply want to give up.
If this sounds familiar, this post is for you. Written with the goal of encouraging you to press on and also sharing strategies on how to do so successfully.
Anyone can achieve success but like every good thing in life, the appropriate steps has to be taken.
Carefully think through what you have been doing and come up a list of things you need to do differently.
Below are four valuable tips for success:
1. Believe yourself: If you do not believe in yourself, no one else will.
Believe you can accomplish that goal, and work hard towards it.
I remember working towards my doctorate degree. I had passed my two qualifying exams and accepted into PhD candidacy, my focus was now on my research. At the end of my third year, through a series of events I found myself in a place where I had to decide if I should quit graduate school or persevere. Things were not working out and I honestly felt like quitting. However, down deep within me I believed I could successfully complete my training and was fortunate to have a few people who believed the same.
I decided to forge ahead and 2 years later I successfully completed the training and earned my doctorate degree.
Choose to move past unbelief and any negative self talk and press on towards your dreams.
Move boldly in the direction of your dreams
Remember this quote …
“Whether you think you can or you can’t do a thing… you are right “– Henry Ford
2. Guard Your Mind: An important fact we all need to know is that we can shape what we believe. This is by carefully vetting what we listen to.
Think about this scenario: if I call you to share my experience on a recent trip with you. I spend about 30 minutes describing all the negative experiences I had on my trip to this particular country you are not familiar with. Then I wrapped up my account by describing the negative accounts of other friends I made on my way back from this country. By the end of the phone call, I would have painted a negative picture of this country in your mind. I can actually leave you thinking “…that’s one country I am never traveling to.”
What really happened? My words created an impression and shaped your belief about a country you have never visited. What if I was completely wrong about this country? That would not matter because you will have believed my words anyway. My point here is words are powerful and they shape our beliefs.
So many times people feed us with lies about ourselves or how far we can go in life or even the level of success we can attain. Unfortunately, many people fall for those lies and allow it to shape their lives.
That does not have to be the case. Even if that has been your story up till now, change the narrative by refusing to believe those words.
Surround yourself with people that belief in you and call out the best in you. Even if you do not have such people in your life now, you can bring those people into your life by reading their books, watching their videos or exposing yourself to any resources they have available.
Take things a step forward by joining communities of people that are supportive and encouraging.
Everyday you are writing a story, you can decide to make this story and ordinary story or a bestselling story. It is up to you!
3. Work hard, Work Smart:
” The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary”.- Vidal Sassoon
There are no short cuts, hard work is very much part of the journey to success.
Clearly define where you are going, when you want to get there and what you need to get there and work your way there.
Working hard is good but working smart is even better. Knowing when to network , how to leverage your network to save time and resources in achieving your goals is also very important.
4 Invest In Yourself:
I still remember listening to a video clip by John Maxwell when he talked about when someone asked him if he had a plan for growth. It was a very interesting and eye opening video for me.
I have since come to realize that the biggest investment anyone can make is investing in yourself. Developing a lifestyle of continual learning and growth.
This may sound like a demanding task but it does not have to be. You can make this easy on your self. Develop a routine that works with your day to day life. For instance, if you have a 20 minute commute each day, you can choose to listen to an audiobook during your commute everyday. You have to commute anyway so why not make the most of it.
Whatever you choose to do, make sure you are investing in yourself, it always pays off!
